What's With The Kits?

What's Actually in the Kit

Every floating shelf kit I ship includes:

The shelf itself, custom-cut from 1.8" thick solid hardwood, sealed with a polyurethane topcoat, with the female half of the Hovr bracket already installed.

The male Hovr bracket that mounts to your wall.

#8 2½" panhead screws (the right length for hitting studs through drywall) and ¾" set screws (for locking the brackets together once mounted).

A 3/16" cobalt drill bit, a 1/8" hex key, and a #2 square drive bit. The cobalt drill bit is the one most kits leave out, and it matters more than the others.

A printed install guide that walks through bracket placement, stud marking, drilling, and final assembly.

The only thing not in the kit is the electric drill, the stud finder, the level, and the tape measure. Everything that ships with the order is what you need to actually mount the shelf.

Why the Drill Bit Matters

Most floating shelf kits ship with a pre-drilled steel bracket. The holes are punched at fixed intervals during manufacturing, which means the bracket can only mount in the spots where those holes happen to line up with your wall studs. If your studs don't match the pre-drilled spacing, the bracket gets mounted partially into drywall, which is exactly where floating shelves fail.

The Hovr bracket is aluminum, which lets the installer drill custom holes wherever the studs actually are. The included cobalt drill bit cuts cleanly through the bracket so screws go directly into wood, every time, regardless of where your studs sit. It's a small detail that decides whether the shelf holds 300 pounds or pulls out of the wall in six months.

Why a Complete Kit Matters

The alternative is buying a shelf from one supplier and a bracket from another, then realizing the screws that came with the bracket are the wrong length for your wall, the drill bit you own is too dull for aluminum, and the install instructions assume a different bracket system than what you actually have. Every floating shelf install starts with hoping everything fits. Mine starts with knowing it does, because every component is built to work with every other component in the box.

Sizing to Your Space

Every kit is made to order between 6" and 12" deep and 12" to 72" long. Order the closest standard size on the product page and put your exact dimensions in the order notes on the cart page. The bracket length scales with the shelf length, so a 24" kit ships with a shorter bracket than a 72" kit. Hardware quantities scale too: longer shelves include more screws because they're mounting into more studs.

If you need something outside that range or have a non-standard wall situation (between fixed points, corner setup, anything unusual), reach out directly before ordering and I'll work out the dimensions with you.

Which Species?

White oak is the most versatile and most requested across rooms.

Walnut brings the deepest, richest grain in the lineup.

Maple is the lightest, cleanest, most modern option.

Cherry is the only species that deepens in color over time.

Live edge walnut keeps the natural slab edge for an organic, one-of-a-kind look.

Painted white and painted black are solid maple with a 2K painted finish, popular in kitchens, bathrooms, and modern interiors.

Not sure which fits? Order samples and see them in your actual lighting before committing.

Floating Shelf Kits & The Hovr Advantage: 13x Stronger & More Durable

At Shelf Expression, we use the Hovr Bracket System for 13x more strength, so your shelves stay level without sagging or slanting. Each stud supports up to 150 lbs, making them perfect for your needs.

Why Use Outdated Hardware For Your Bar Floating Shelves

Most floating shelves use a simple 2-prong system, creating weak points and capping weight capacity at around 50 lbs per stud. Fine for light décor, not fine for a real heavy duty work. Our shelves use the Hovr Bracket System, where a male and female bracket interlock and screw together for strength that actually holds up.

With that design, our shelf kits handle up to 150 lbs per stud. Bottles, glassware, a full collection. Load them up.
